Our Lea County Hero:

Wilburn Glen Chastain

Corporal Glen Chastain

(U.S. Army – Korean Conflict Veteran)

Corporal Glen Chastain was born on November 9, 1930, in Stamps, Arkansas, to Tilman and Grace (Buchanan) Chastain. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army and proudly served during the Korean Conflict.

He attended basic training and specialized infantry instruction before being assigned to the Entry 78th A.E. Battalion, Company A, 5th Infantry Division. Glen’s service took him overseas to Germany, where he was responsible for key logistical and support operations during the post-war occupation era.

Despite the hardships of military life, Glen carried out his duties faithfully. He often shared lighthearted stories about his time overseas — such as how he rode on another big ship line to Germany, yet always stayed seasick and couldn’t eat certain foods the entire voyage. Though he rarely discussed the details of his service, his humility spoke volumes about his quiet strength and character.

His family recalls that Glen was a very private and humble man, one who never sought recognition but always gave his best. He believed the Army helped shape him into the man he became, instilling lifelong values of discipline, honor, and perseverance.

After returning home from service, Glen married the love of his life, Frances (LeMay) Chastain, in 1955, and together they shared 61 years of marriage. The couple made their home in Lovington, New Mexico, where Glen worked as a mechanic in the oilfield for many years, earning a reputation as a hardworking, soft-spoken man who could fix nearly anything.

He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and was known for his kindness and gentle spirit. Glen and Frances were devoted members of Hillcrest Baptist Church and active in their community.

Corporal Glen Chastain passed away on July 22, 2016, at his residence in Lovington, surrounded by the family he loved.

We honor Corporal Glen Chastain for his service to the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, his lifelong devotion to family, and his quiet strength and faith that continue to inspire all who knew him.
