Our Lea County Hero:

James Charles Williams

Private First Class James Charles Williams

(U.S. Army – World War II, European Theater)

James Charles Williams was born on September 30, 1914, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent his early years there before moving west, first to West Texas and later settling in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, where he worked on small ranches caring for cattle and learning the value of hard work and perseverance.

As the world was drawn into conflict, James answered the call of duty, enlisting in the United States Army around 1940–1941. He was soon deployed overseas to Great Britain as part of the Allied forces preparing for the liberation of Europe during World War II.

While stationed in Great Britain, James met the love of his life, Margaret, and the two were married during the war. Margaret later came to the United States as a war bride, proudly becoming a U.S. citizen and beginning a new life alongside her husband.

Like many of his generation, James rarely spoke about his wartime experiences, but those who knew him recalled his quiet humility and steadfast character. He often joked that he couldn’t stand the taste of fish — a lifelong reminder of the countless seafood meals served during his time stationed overseas.

After the war, James returned home to America, settling in Clovis, New Mexico, where he worked for the railroad before moving to Lovington in 1951. There, he began a long and dedicated career at the diesel plant for Lea County Electric Cooperative, where he worked faithfully until his passing.

James and Margaret built a loving family together. They welcomed their daughter Martha in August 1951 and their son Michael in March 1953. Together, they raised their children with the timeless values of faith, integrity, patriotism, and hard work — to love God, love their country, and always keep their word.

James Charles Williams passed away on January 19, 1972, and his beloved Margaret joined him two years later, on March 17, 1974.

Though they are gone, their legacy continues to shine brightly through their children, granddaughter, and two great-granddaughters. The Williams family remains a proud example of the strength, sacrifice, and love that define America’s Greatest Generation.

We honor Private First Class James Charles Williams for his faithful service to the United States Army, his devotion to family, and his quiet but enduring patriotism. His legacy continues to live on through all who follow his example of faith, humility, and love of country.
