Specialist De’on Austin Miller
(U.S. Army – Operation Just Cause Veteran)
Specialist De’on Austin Miller began her service in the United States Army at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Washington, D.C., located just two miles from the White House. Assigned to the Overseas Support Branch, she supported four international research laboratories, providing critical logistical and administrative coordination.
Life at Walter Reed was unlike most military posts—there were few formations, and physical training (PT) was often self-directed. De’on, however, thrived in the structure and discipline of the Army lifestyle. A passionate runner, she proudly ran every single day, finding both strength and peace through her daily miles.
Her calm early assignment quickly changed when she deployed to Panama, arriving nine days before the start of Operation Just Cause in December 1989. Stationed near the Bridge of the Americas, she rode shotgun on supply convoys, ensuring the safe delivery of ammunition, food, and water to American troops during the U.S. intervention to restore stability to the region.
After the conflict ended, De’on transitioned to a wide variety of duties—from office operations to driving forklifts—continuing to serve with dedication, energy, and her trademark sense of determination. Her son, Aaron Austin, was able to live with her in Panama for a year and a half, once families were cleared to join their loved ones after the fighting ceased. Those memories became some of her most cherished moments of military life.
Two months before her ETS (Expiration of Term of Service), fate brought love her way. She met the man who would become her lifelong partner—now together for over 33 years.
Years later, tragedy struck when her son, Lance Corporal Aaron Cole Austin, was killed in action in Iraq while serving in the United States Marine Corps. In his memory, De’on and her husband lovingly raised his pit bull, honoring his spirit and his love for animals. Over time, that single act of love grew into a family of dogs, each one a reminder of loyalty, healing, and resilience.
We honor Specialist De’on Austin Miller for her service in the United States Army, her steadfast commitment to supporting her fellow soldiers, and her enduring love as both a mother and veteran. Her courage, strength, and faith exemplify the spirit of service that binds generations of American heroes together.
