Chief Master Sergeant Archie Cunningham
(U.S. Air Force – Air Policeman & Community Leader)
Archie Cunningham was born and raised in Missouri, where his strong faith and sense of duty began at an early age. After graduating from high school, he answered his nation’s call and joined the United States Air Force.
He completed Basic Training in Texas and then continued his advanced training in Colorado, specializing with the Sentry Dog Handlers Course — part of the Air Force’s elite security and defense program. Following this, Archie was stationed at Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso, Texas, where he served proudly as an Air Policeman with the 95th Combat Defense Squadron, part of the Strategic Air Command (SAC).
It was in El Paso where Archie met the love of his life, Patsy, who was studying nursing at the time. Their connection deepened through faith, friendship, and mutual respect. When Patsy returned home to help her family and later joined the U.S. Army, Archie remained devoted — writing to her every single day. Eventually, he proposed to her by letter and phone, and the two were married soon after, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love and service.
After completing his military service, Archie and Patsy settled in Hobbs, later moving to Lovington, where they would spend the next six decades together. Archie worked for Rainbow Bread Company in Lovington for ten years before joining the Lovington Police Department, where he served faithfully for 30 years, including 20 years as Chief of Police.
During his decades of public service, Archie earned numerous honors and awards — far too many to list — but one of the recognitions that meant the most to him was being named Citizen of the Year. His dedication to his community, his humility, and his steady leadership left an enduring mark on Lovington.
Archie and Patsy were deeply patriotic, often visiting local schools to speak to students about the importance of freedom, respect for the flag, and appreciation for America’s veterans. They also opened their home to children and youth who needed a safe place for the weekend, providing shelter, comfort, and compassion to those in need.
Archie was a devoted member of Hillcrest Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where he served as a Deacon, held numerous church offices, and lived his faith daily. A prayer warrior, he prayed faithfully for his family, his friends, and his country.
Together, Archie and Patsy raised a beautiful family — one daughter, two sons, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, along with many loved ones gained through marriage. His legacy is one of strength, service, and unwavering faith.
We honor Chief Master Sergeant Archie Cunningham for his proud service in the United States Air Force, his lifelong dedication to law enforcement, and his steadfast devotion to his family, his faith, and his community. A true patriot, servant, and man of God.
